We should also reflect on the values of resilience, community, and opportunity. Voices from Our Community
A 39-year journey with HIV has transformed one woman's outlook on life. Today, she describes life differently, not as the end of her story, but as the beginning of a life lived with purpose, resilience, and truth. Her journey began during a period of incarceration, where she learned of her diagnosis. At a time when treatment options were limited and uncertainty was overwhelming, she made a decision that would shape the course of her life. She committed herself to living as healthily and fully as possible. She focused on daily exercise, healthy eating, and caring for her mental well-being. Along the way, she faced additional challenges, including the loss of her mother. It was during this difficult period that she made a life-changing decision. "I decided that I was really going to start living," she shared. Rather than allowing HIV to define her, she began redefining what living with HIV could look like. "This virus is not a death sentence for me," she said. As she reflected on her life in San Antonio, she recalled first hearing about SAAF nearly 40 years ago when the organization was just beginning. Since then, she has witnessed the organization's growth and impact firsthand. SAAF has provided her with support through housing assistance, food resources, and words of encouragement when she needed them most. When asked about her experience with SAAF, she smiled and said, "I'd give SAAF a 100 for services and a 120 for helpfulness. "Through strength, support, and determination, she has built a life filled with purpose and possibility. Her story reminds us that while an HIV diagnosis may become part of someone's story, it does not have to define the ending. And while this chapter of her journey is inspiring, it is far from the end. Her story continues to be written
