Since 1986, the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF, /sāf/) has provided free hot meals for anyone who is HIV positive. In order to receive meals, one need not be a client of SAAF. However, those who are HIV positive and wishing to receive free hot meals need a referral from their primary case manager or to provide the necessary paperwork to receive a SAAF meal card. SAAF provides 3 free hot nutritious meals a day, 365 days a year. Special holiday meals are prepared and served for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
All menus are reviewed by a registered dietitian and include foods that help provide for the particular dietary needs of persons with HIV/AIDS. Meals are provided in SAAF’s congregate dining room at our Grayson location, at 818 E. Grayson St., San Antonio, TX 78208.
Mealtimes for community based clients are: Breakfast 8:45 – 9:30 AM Lunch 12:15 – 1:00 PM Dinner 5:15 – 6:00PM.
Meal cards are required to obatin each meal.
Chef of the Month
Recently SAAFs Hot Meals Project launched an extension called Nourishing SAAF-Chef of the Month Project where each month an area chef offers their time and talents to prepare a special culinary delight to HIV/AIDS clients. The Nourishing SAAF-Chef of the Month Project, monthly, offers a featured chef the opportunity to prepare one meal (either lunch or dinner) during their designated month.
What is the Chef of the Month?
Nourishing SAAF is a newly developed Chef of the Month Project by the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) that combines cuisine with community. One of SAAFs services is our Hot Meals Program that offers free meals to individuals who are HIV positive. In conjunction with the Hot Meals Program Nourishing SAAF is an opportunity for local chefs to put their culinary talents to use for the community. Each month Nourishing SAAF will highlight a chef who will prepare a meal for clients and residents who take advantage of the Hot Meals Program.
How it works.
The featured chef will prepare one meal (either lunch or dinner) during their designated month. The chef will consult with SAAF’s Dietary Team to develop a menu. The featured chef will use the food and supplies provided by SAAF or may bring in supplemental items to prepare that month’s meal for residents and clients.

SAAF Food Bank
The San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF, pronounced "safe") is dedicated to serving the community at every level of need. Under the umbrella of the Nourishing SAAF services we offer the SAAF Food Bank to indiviudals infected with HIV as well as helping others in thye local community.
The SAAF Food Bank is run on a voucher system in which clients and community members may obtain through our dietary or case management departments.
Every second Wednesday of the month SAAF transforms the parking lot at our Grayson location into a full service pick-up and go food stop. SAAF partners with the San Antonio Food Bank to bring food to those in need.
